This is the story of a guy and a conference. At said conference, he saw a keynote by some guy at Flickr. The keynote was about how Django sucked. But one thing caught said guy’s eye, the fact that Django needed a mascot. Read on to experience the ensuing pony-fest.

As many of you know, DjangoCon came to a close yesterday. Long story short, one of my favorite conferences ever. The laughs, memories, connections and available knowledge — endless. Soon, there’ll be videos of all the talks for all to enjoy, but I couldn’t help acting on one of my favorite talks of the first night, Cal Henderson’s keynote on why he hates Django.

Cal Henderson on Why I hate Django?

In it, amongst other things, he talked about how Django needed a mascot. One that was awesome and had magical powers. Well, somewhere inside my head, I agreed. Since the pony seems to have much historical significance within the Django project, I give you the logo for “the web framework for ponies with magical powers.” Django is now awesome.

The Framework for Ponies

Wilson, I expect the redesign tomorrow. ;)

Update: Now in green by popular demand!

The Framework for Green Ponies

Update 2: To my amazement there is now a website dedicated the lovable pony. Once I find out who made it, I’ll be sure to talk to them about what my plan was for shirts. :)

Update 3: I think I found him.

Update 4: So the pony’s magic didn’t stay unexplained for long as investigators found out what really powers our beloved Django pony.

Update 5: Updated the post with the video of Cal’s keynote. Watch it, now.

distort the message.

  1. #001Nick Sergeant

Ha, wow. I love it, in a weird, creepy kind of way. :)

  2. #002Dan

It might just be because the django site is green, and perhaps because it uses python. But I’ve always felt like django should have a green logo.

This is very nice though, very cute.

  3. #003Bryan Veloso

I did try to make the pony green, but green ponies give my “future unborn children that I haven’t thought about making” nightmares. And nightmares about green ponies would be lame anyway, but extremely frightening nonetheless.

  4. #004John Stephens

because the django site is green… I’ve always felt like django should have a green logo.

But the logo is pink. I agree with the main guy in the story: The site should be made to match the logo. ;)

If the site was pink, maybe I could get my seven year old daughter to learn Django.

  5. #005basti

That’s a cutie. Someone wanted to redesign djangoproject.org if i remember correctly … i guess we have an initial colourset :)

  6. #006Dave Lowe

I love it! :D Absolutely hilarious. Now I’m envisioning the entire Django site in pink.

  7. #007Jan

Cool stuff! I like it a lot, but a pink website? Come on!

  8. #008Jose Mota

I only know Django by name, never had the chance to mess around but I must say that if Django is that powerful, then a pony should do just fine! Either that or a gecko (greeny, funny, cute?).

  9. #009zgoda

Beautiful! My daughter will love it!

  10. #010huxley

But … but … but … they removed the magic ages ago!

    … but seriously cute logo!

  11. #011Robert Lofthouse

This is exactly the kind of thing DjangoCon was meant for: Inspiring developers to insert awesomeness into Django.

That logo and colour also goes hand in hand with my tagline “Django: The Raspberry Mojito of Web Frameworks” tagline.

    Cal’s keynote was awesome :)

  12. #012barbara

I refuse to acknowledge the existence of a drink that sounds as vile as a raspberry mojito. Django is more like a sidecar, or a lemon drop … or a lemon-basil martini.

(Can’t we just make the magic pony green?)

  13. #013Bryan Veloso

But pink ponies are more magical than green ponies. D: Nevertheless, you got your green pony. More shirt options that way. ;)

  14. #014Michael Anckaert

That is an awesome sweet mascot ^^

OT: This is the first time I saw your blog and holy crap I freaking like it! Really awesome theme! Now time to explore the contents, hope it’s as good as your design ;-)

  15. #015mattw

    needs more dingo.

  16. #016sebastian

sorry, but it still lacks the beard!

  17. #017hraban

    Where’s my T-Shirt?

  18. #018No’

Just for that pure moment of fun, you deserve a Beer over IP

  19. #019vangelis

First sighting of the Magic Pony in the wild:

  20. #020Julian

That pony looks to girlish! :D Please make it without hair and not so detailed.. it has to look cute but more uhm abstract.. boyish..technical… but not sci-fi robot like.. yep.. something plain and simple.

  21. #021Chris Hoeppner

Love it. Really. Pink seems to weirdly fit Django, more than green does, IMHO.

Now, Bryan, your holy duty is to redesign djangoproject.com, and force them to use your design.

And, as hraban said, Where is my T-Shirt??

  22. #022Horst Gutmann

T-Shirt please :D Anybody motivated for a user stylesheet? ;-)

  23. #023hotgirlseverywhere

Honestly the pink one is way cooler. I mean, sure there exist [irrational] social judgements that pink is not acceptable, not masculine, or even homosexual, but the pink pony is authentic and magical. The green one is also quite cool but it does not embody the true meaning of magical powers!

  24. #024barbara

please let’s not get into the discussion about why the mascot needs to be more masculine :) I want into the club too

  25. #025Bryan Veloso

Looks like I’ll be working on a t-shirt design today. ;) I think for the “masculine” argument, you could choose green over pink.

  26. #026Trevor

I vote for leaving it pink. Way more magical that way. And the contrast with a green site really makes the thing stand out.

  27. #027Nash

Oh no no no no no! No ponies! The only exception is that if it was a robot pony. Yeah, that would be cool. Can it have laser eyes?

  28. #028Michael Thompson

    Pink++

And I’ve love to see a t-shirt, in any color.

  29. #029Anonymous

T-shirt. Yes! T-shirt! The green version on a white t-shirt. Yes!

  30. #030Amre Ellafi

hehehe ! the T-shirt will be a must have !

  31. #031James Tauber

I presume the ponies with magical powers live in Cloud27

  32. #032Wilson Miner

Ew. I think I touched it. Now I’m going to have glitter on my hands all day.

  33. #033barbara

    so much better than a t-shirt: http://tinyurl.com/6qldvx

  34. #034Bryan Veloso

Barbara — That is serious win right there my friend.

  35. #035Horst Gutmann

    Definitely pink :D

  36. #036David Reynolds

Bryan, how about some badges with the pony on?

  37. #037Fernando

Graphics design has always been a mystery to me. Have you designed the logo only by using mouse or have you used some kind of digitizer?

    Cheers, Freddie

  38. #038Steven Osborn

    pwnies!

  39. #039Snirp

That should be the cute little things name: DJANGO PWNY

  40. #040JoshG

I got busted riding the Magic Django Pwny…

  41. #041Snirp

@ #040 • JoshG You know that some countries have legislation to prevent such a thing? The pony helped get my niece on django, but you seem to spoil it all.

  42. #042Alexandre Gauthier

The pony is probably the greatest thing I have seen for weeks. It should be made official, actually.

Also, love the blog. Great design.

  43. #043Steve Ramsay

Has the cease-and-desist order (from Hasbro, who makes “My Little Pony”) arrived yet?

  44. #044sean

the pink django pony looks so cute!

  45. #045IPM

    ¡¡Oh my god!! ¡¡¡No!!! django for guys, ¡it’s a Barbie’s pony!

  46. #046FFFish

Pink. It shows way more sense of humour. Django is fun: the pink pony logo is fun. It’s also very unusual, which means it will attract attention. And that’s a good thing.

If you have pink pony issues, you need to get over yourself. You are not the pony. The pony does not make a statement about you: it makes a statement about Django.

  47. #047Daniel

Just so you know - there are horrible artifacts around all the bold or linked words on this page when using Chrome.

  48. #048gaylord

django is gay-friendly, i love it

  49. #049oyun zamani

    woww beatifull thankx
